McAllister Thomas is delighted to present a solo exhibition by renowned landscape painter David Atkins.
I have been busy preparing for my show at McAllister Thomas Gallery and will be showing a collection of paintings of the sea at West Wittering and small paintings of London.
West Wittering was one of the first beaches I painted after leaving art school and my first real experience of painting plein air. I learnt a lot on that visit and did so very quickly. I realised I had to set my self up properly if I was going to cope with all that the elements had to offer. In particular, how to deal with an keeping hold of the easel in strong winds, moving quickly with an incoming tide, avoiding sand and flies sticking to a painting and selecting positions that avoided the many interested passers by. After suffering mild hypothermia, I learnt how to keep warm and dry and keep my packed lunch safe from any passing dogs. I feel a lot more prepared and experienced in such matters now but I still feel I haven’t learnt all there is to know about painting the land and seascape. The beach at West Wittering remains for me one that is full of memories and always one that is still offering me new challenges. It hasn’t changed much in thirty years apart from what the sea reclaims.
The small paintings of London were painted from studies and sketches I continually make in my sketchbook when visiting London. They are full of colour, light, movement and joy.
